Dewa

Dewa was born in Ubud, Bali. A graduate of the Institute of Art (ISI), Denpasar, Bali, his work is continuing to receive more exposure, recently participating in local group exhibitions in and around the creative center of Bali, Ubud and also abroad, recently in Swistzerland.

Thematic to Dewa’s work are love, security and freedom. Human experience and ideas he subjectively translates into compositions upon the canvases. The images that are exposed serve as statements of a young man attempting to comprehend his personal reality and finding meaning within him.

Dewa’s naïve human characters encourage introspection of both the subject and the viewer’s world, we may draw parallels with the themes and our own realities, reflect on events and perhaps see them in a new light. The animal figures are more simply expressions in being, freely allowed to exist on their merits, encouraging in us that sense of identity, being and our own individual right to exist.

Dewa’s fascination and love of animals represents that part of the human psyche that at times is incoherent and indistinguishable, yet it exists symbolically within the subconscious. The rendering of these ‘power animals’, the elephant, bird, white horse and the cat are significantly representative of positive human traits. In Bali, the copious religious imagery depicts animals accompanying deities from the Ramayana and Mahabarata Hindu Epics. These deities are definitive and essential parts of the fabric of the Balinese Hindu culture and daily life.
